Actor profile
Career and selected work
Tim McMullan is an English stage and screen actor whose work includes classical theatre, literary adaptations and contemporary drama. His selected films include The Fifth Element, Shakespeare in Love and The Queen. Television viewers may recognise Arthur Valentine in Foyle’s War, Sonny Gravesend in Patrick Melrose or Robin Woods in The Crown. These roles offer several entry points beyond Atticus Pünd.
Foyle’s War is a particularly relevant connection because Anthony Horowitz knew McMullan’s work as Valentine before the Susan Ryeland adaptations. The two roles belong to separate series and very different investigative worlds. For a viewing comparison, choose one television appearance and one film from the list. Pay attention to how the character listens as well as to the lines he speaks. Pünd’s conversations often ask the audience to do the same. A brief supporting part can make an interesting comparison with a continuing lead because the amount of time available to establish a character changes so markedly.
Six roles to explore
- The Fifth Element (1997) — scientist’s aide.
- Shakespeare in Love (1998) — Frees.
- The Queen (2006) — Stephen Lamport.
- Foyle’s War (2013–2015) — Arthur Valentine.
- The Crown (2019) — Robin Woods.
- Patrick Melrose (2018) — Sonny Gravesend.
In the Susan Ryeland adaptations
McMullan plays Atticus Pünd throughout the Susan Ryeland adaptations. Pünd is the detective inside the novels, and the television series also lets Susan imagine conversations with him as she works through a case. This is not the same as giving McMullan a separate contemporary counterpart. The distinction is essential to the programme’s structure: Pünd can guide Susan’s thinking while remaining a fictional creation. Follow the individual manuscript’s investigation separately from Susan’s real-world interviews, then consider how their conversations connect the two methods of solving a mystery.
