Actor profile
Career and selected work
Michael Maloney is an English actor with extensive work in theatre, film, television and voice performance. Several of his screen credits connect directly with Shakespeare: the Dauphin in Henry V, Laertes in Hamlet, and Joe Harper in In the Bleak Midwinter. The last of those is itself concerned with putting on a Shakespeare production, rather than simply filming the play. Truly, Madly, Deeply offers a different film starting point.
Maloney also plays historical figures including Robert Peel in The Young Victoria and Edward Heath in The Crown. The selected list below is a route through a few recognisable performances, not a complete account of his career. For Ryeland Companion readers, a useful comparison is between the working relationships of In the Bleak Midwinter and Charles Clover’s publishing world. In each case, think about how a professional setting shapes an exchange. That comparison concerns the stories and roles; it does not make the characters or productions part of one continuity.
Six roles to explore
- Henry V (1989) — the Dauphin.
- Truly, Madly, Deeply (1990) — Mark.
- In the Bleak Midwinter (1995) — Joe Harper.
- Hamlet (1996) — Laertes.
- The Young Victoria (2009) — Robert Peel.
- The Crown (2019) — Edward Heath.
In the Susan Ryeland adaptations
Maloney plays Charles Clover, Susan’s publisher and colleague. Charles belongs to the contemporary publishing strand, where a manuscript is both a piece of writing and a commercial responsibility. He appears in Magpie Murders and returns in Marble Hall Murders. His relationship with Susan gives the series a way to explore decisions about authors, editing and the future of a publishing business. Follow what is being proposed professionally as carefully as the personal conversation around it: a change to a book or a working arrangement can send Susan towards a new set of people.
