Actor profile
Career and selected work
Claire Rushbrook is an English actor whose work ranges from ensemble television drama to leading film roles. Secrets & Lies is an early film landmark; Ali & Ava places her at the centre of a later, very different story. The television selection includes the historical community of Home Fires, the family relationships of My Mad Fat Diary and the investigations of Whitechapel. Doctor Who viewers may remember her as Ida Scott in The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit.
There is also a particularly pleasing connection for Susan Ryeland viewers: Rushbrook and Lesley Manville play sisters in Sherwood as well as in these mysteries. That does not make the characters equivalent. It does, however, offer a useful opportunity to compare how a familiar pair of performers establishes a different family relationship in another drama. For a short introduction to Rushbrook’s work, the two films below provide a clear starting point, while Home Fires gives more time to follow a continuing character across an ensemble story.
Six roles to explore

- Whitechapel (2009–2013) — Dr Caroline Llewellyn.
- My Mad Fat Diary (2013–2015) — Linda.
- Home Fires (2015–2016) — Pat Simms.
- Ali & Ava (2021) — Ava.
In the Susan Ryeland adaptations
Rushbrook plays Katie Williams, Susan Ryeland’s sister, in the continuing contemporary storyline. Katie is part of the life Susan brings to an investigation: family history, familiar disagreements and a relationship that exists before any new manuscript arrives. Unlike the performers assigned two fictional-world counterparts, Rushbrook returns as the same person. The sisters’ conversations are therefore worth following across the series rather than treating them as detachable pauses between clues. They show how Susan sounds to someone who knows her beyond her professional reputation as an editor.
