Actor profile
Career and selected work
Lorcan Cranitch is an Irish actor whose career includes crime drama, family stories and film adaptations. His television roles include Jimmy Beck in Cracker and Sean Dillon in Ballykissangel. The selected films range from Dancing at Lughnasa to Love, Rosie, The Dig and Herself. The Dig listed here is the 2018 Irish film, an important distinction when searching for a title shared with another production.
For a viewer familiar with Magpie Murders, comparing a television role with one of these films is a useful route into Cranitch’s wider work. It changes the amount of time available to establish a person and the audience’s expectations about how a story will develop. The selection is intentionally varied rather than a list confined to detectives and suspects. A performer’s appearance in several mysteries does not make every character a clue to another one. Start with the credited production and date, then approach the role in the context of that individual story.

In the Susan Ryeland adaptations
Cranitch plays Max Ryeland in the contemporary strand and Sir Magnus Pye in Conway’s novel. Max belongs to Susan’s personal history; Sir Magnus belongs to the social world of Saxby-on-Avon. That pairing brings the adaptation’s echoes close to the main character rather than leaving them solely among strangers she interviews. On a first watch, make sure the relationship attached to each name is clear. On a rewatch, compare the way the two men occupy their households and the reactions they provoke, while keeping events in the manuscript separate from Susan’s memories.
