Actor profile

Career and selected work

Rosalie Craig is an English actor and singer with a particularly extensive musical-theatre career. The Light Princess, Company and The Threepenny Opera are useful starting points, alongside her Rosalind in As You Like It. Her television work includes the librarian in The Queen’s Gambit and Virginia Wilson in 1899. The combination of stage and screen credits is important: a filmography alone would leave out much of the work through which audiences know her.

For viewers coming from Moonflower, comparing a dramatic television appearance with a recorded stage performance can make the differences in storytelling especially clear. A stage production’s cast must be checked carefully, however, because a later revival or recording may feature different performers. The dates below identify the relevant production period. Craig’s musical work is also a reminder to listen as well as look: phrasing, pauses and the shape of a spoken exchange can establish a character just as quickly as a costume or a close-up.

Six roles to explore

In the Susan Ryeland adaptations

Craig plays Lisa Treherne in the contemporary story and Melissa James inside Conway’s novel. Lisa belongs to the family running Branlow Hall, while Melissa is part of the period mystery at the centre of Susan’s reading. The roles occupy different social positions and should not be treated as one biography. On a first watch, attach each name to the correct household. On a rewatch, compare how other people speak about the two women with what their own scenes show. The gap between a reputation and a person is a useful thread to follow without opening the ending.

Musical theatre

Craig played Bobbie in Company at the Gielgud Theatre, directed by Marianne Elliott. Her agency also lists Althea in The Light Princess at the National Theatre and June Levant in Good Night, Oscar at the Barbican. These are selected stage roles alongside her television work.
