Who Melissa James is
Melissa James is a former film star whose post-Hollywood life includes The Moonflower hotel in Tawleigh. She is the murder victim at the centre of Atticus Pünd Takes the Case, the earlier Conway novel Susan rereads when Cecily disappears. Her fame attracts admiration, opportunism and resentment in different proportions.
Role in Moonflower Murders
Melissa’s affairs extend beyond a single troubled relationship. The hotel’s accounts disappoint her, her financial manager is unreliable, and people around her fear the decisions she may make. Those overlapping disputes create a classic detective-story problem: several people have something to lose, but only a precise sequence of events can identify the killer.
Key relationships
Algernon Marsh handles her finances; Lance Gardner and Maureen Gardner run the hotel. Oscar Berlin connects her to her film career. The Chandlers work in her household, and her husband John Spencer becomes a principal focus of suspicion.
Played by Rosalie Craig
Rosalie Craig plays Melissa James. Craig also plays Lisa Treherne. The two women’s shared face links the hotel worlds while their different social positions and fates keep the investigations distinct.
Their story and fate — spoilers
John attacks Melissa and leaves believing he has killed her. She survives long enough to telephone Dr Leonard Collins, her lover, who then murders her to protect his marriage and access to Samantha’s inheritance. The distinction between the two attacks explains why John’s confession does not solve the case. Melissa’s obsessive admirer Madeline Cain later kills John in revenge, acting on an incomplete understanding of events.
Books and television — book spoilers
Melissa’s husband is named Francis Pendleton in the novel and John Spencer on television. The adaptation also makes her resemblance to Lisa Treherne visible by casting Rosalie Craig in both roles. That pairing is part of Conway’s transformation of Branlow Hall into fiction, but the invented actress’s relationships are not a reliable biography of Lisa. The case depends on interpreting that transformation rather than accepting it literally.
