Danilia Village, Corfu: filming and visiting guide

What was filmed here

Danilia is a reconstructed traditional Corfiot village and a well-known screen setting, associated with The Durrells and For Your Eyes Only. It is also reported among the Corfu locations for Marble Hall Murders. Unlike the public lanes of Corfu Old Town, Danilia is a managed visitor and hospitality venue operated by Grecotel. Plan around its current tour, dining or event arrangements rather than assuming you can wander in at any hour. The attraction is especially interesting for fans who enjoy production design: its coherent village setting offers a different experience from a single hotel façade or a busy city street.

About the place

Danilia recreates the atmosphere of a Corfiot village of the 1930s. It is a constructed heritage environment, not an untouched medieval settlement, and that distinction is part of what makes it useful for filming. Streets, façades and shared spaces can evoke a period while remaining within one managed site. Grecotel describes a folklore museum, traditional coffee-shop experience and displays connected with older island crafts and daily life. Those elements make a visit more substantial than a quick photograph of a recognisable corner. Compare how domestic, commercial and communal spaces sit together, and consider how a camera can make the same small area feel like a larger fictional village. The island’s broader architectural history is visible elsewhere in real working towns and villages; Danilia offers a curated interpretation of that world, with its own visitor rules and programme.

Getting there

There is no railway on Corfu. Arrange a taxi, drive, or use a transfer specifically included in a booked Grecotel experience. Some Grecotel hotel programmes advertise shared transfers for particular Danilia reservations, but eligibility and times depend on the hotel and booking. A bus to a nearby coastal settlement is not automatically a convenient bus to the entrance, so check the final leg before relying on public transport. Drivers approach from the Corfu Town–Kontokali/Gouvia side of the island and should follow the venue’s current directions. Confirm visitor parking and your arrival point with the booking. Avoid walking along an unsuitable road from a distant stop simply because the straight-line distance looks short.

Current visitor arrangements

The operator currently lists guided tours daily from 10:00 to 19:00 between May and October. Dinner is listed from 19:00 to 22:00 daily except Mondays in the same season. The Kafeneion is listed from 10:00 to 19:00 daily except Mondays between May and October, and from 10:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays and Sundays in March and April. Reservations are required. The operator describes its guided-tour offer for Grecotel hotel guests and does not publish guaranteed walk-in access for independent visitors, so confirm eligibility and access before travelling. The published guided-tour admission is €20 per adult and €10 per child and includes the transfer, tour and a Kafeneion treat. Check the current Danilia programme and reserve with the operator.

A short self-guided walk

Allow about 60–90 minutes for a visit focused on the village and displays, or longer for a booked meal. The operator’s programme takes precedence over this suggested sequence.

  1. Begin at the authorised visitor entrance at your booked time. Check whether your visit is guided and which parts of the site are open.
  2. Walk the main village street at a relaxed pace, noticing how the fronts and upper windows create a continuous period setting.
  3. Pause in the central open space without obstructing a group or an event. This is a good place to understand the layout before following smaller routes.
  4. Visit the folklore displays or museum areas included in your admission. Read the labels for the real island history behind the objects.
  5. Use the coffee-shop or dining element if it is part of your reservation, then return to the designated pickup or parking area.

When comparing booking options, distinguish a guided daytime visit, a meal reservation and a hotel excursion. They may include different transfers, refreshments and access periods. Ask for the total price and the return arrangement before choosing, especially if you are staying outside the operator’s hotels. Save the confirmation rather than relying on a general travel article’s timetable. The historical photographs below show Danilia at earlier dates; they are useful context, not a promise that every display or surface remains unchanged.

Where to stay

  • Kontokali — a convenient coastal base for comparing nearby accommodation and arranging a taxi.
  • Gouvia — another nearby settlement with accommodation options and access to the central island road network.
  • Kommeno — consider this area if your chosen hotel offers a Danilia programme, checking exactly what is included.
  • Corfu Town — best for combining the visit with the Old Town and a wider restaurant choice.

Nearby

Kontokali and Gouvia provide nearby coastal context, while Corfu Old Town adds a much larger public heritage walk. Agios Ioannis and the Petrettini area form another inland outing, but private access there must be separately arranged. On a busy summer day, allow generous road time rather than scheduling back-to-back reservations at different properties. A Danilia visit works well as the main event of a half-day, followed by a relaxed meal or a town walk. It does not need several additional film stops to justify the journey.

Best time to visit and accessibility

Follow the operator’s seasonal programme and confirm the time shortly before travel. A daytime visit is best for examining the buildings and museum displays; an evening dining experience has a different focus. Cobbles, thresholds and older-style surfaces may be difficult for some visitors. Ask the venue about the route, toilets, seating and any steps before booking, especially if using a wheelchair or walking aid. Bring water and sun protection for outdoor sections, and confirm where to wait for a transfer if the weather changes.

Visiting respectfully

Follow the venue’s route and photography rules, giving private events and other visitors space. Do not enter closed rooms or areas dressed for a current production.
