Who Sajid Khan is

Sajid Khan is the solicitor whose professional knowledge helps Susan understand the legal and financial arrangements around Alan Conway. His scenes bring contracts, wills and obligations into a mystery that can otherwise look as though it is driven entirely by literary clues and personal resentment.

Role in Magpie Murders

In Magpie, Sajid’s account of Alan’s affairs gives Susan information about who stood to benefit and what agreements existed. In Moonflower he reappears when Susan needs to understand arrangements connected with Branlow Hall. He provides a useful contrast to witnesses describing feelings or memories: legal documents can establish a commitment, though Susan still has to interpret what people did because of it.

Key relationships

Susan Ryeland questions him as she reconstructs the cases. Alan Conway and Andreas Patakis are linked through the hotel loan that he helps explain. His work places him between people whose private intentions may look very different when reduced to an agreement about money.

Played by Sanjeev Kohli

Sanjeev Kohli plays Sajid Khan. His Magpie counterpart is Dr Kamal. The parallel concerns their roles as professional sources of information, not a literal connection between the solicitor and the village doctor.

Their story and fate — spoilers

The Magpie loan is particularly important because it changes Susan’s understanding of Andreas’s visit to Alan. What appeared to be a threatening encounter is explained as a financial arrangement for the hotel in Crete. Sajid’s involvement supports that account. The revelation illustrates why a money connection should be investigated carefully rather than treated as a motive that automatically proves violence.

Books and television — book spoilers

Sanjeev Kohli also plays Dr Kamal in Magpie’s manuscript world. One character explains legal arrangements; the other supplies medical care and local knowledge. Both can give the central investigator a useful professional perspective. Kohli returns as Sajid in Moonflower, but Dr Kamal is not his second role in that series. The dual casting belongs specifically to the first adaptation’s set of contemporary and fictional counterparts.
