Who Jack Whiteley is

Jack Whiteley is part of the commercial life of Saxby-on-Avon in Alan Conway’s fictional mystery. Pünd’s interest in him grows when objects from Pye Hall and questions about his past suggest that the village’s respectable surface may conceal a different history.

Role in Magpie Murders

The investigation places a silver brooch and other stolen property beside the recent deaths. Whiteley’s connection to those objects opens one possible explanation of events: a burglary, a hidden past and somebody who may have discovered it. Pünd has to test that explanation rather than accept it merely because it looks like a recognisable criminal pattern. An old conviction can make a person easy to suspect without proving a new murder.

Key relationships

Atticus Pünd recognises grounds for looking more closely at him, and DI Chubb investigates his background. Sir Magnus Pye owns the household from which property has disappeared. His contemporary counterpart is Jack White, Alan Conway’s neighbour.

Played by Karl Collins

Karl Collins plays Jack Whiteley. Collins also plays Jack White. The shared face and near-identical name make this an especially conspicuous example of Conway turning a grievance into fiction.

Their story and fate — spoilers

Whiteley’s past involvement in the Mansion Gang comes to light, and stolen goods connect him to the burglary. Mary Blakiston had learned about his history. Those facts create suspicion, but they do not explain the whole case. Pünd ultimately identifies Robert Blakiston as the killer of Magnus and Brent, with the search for Mary’s letter at the centre of the sequence. Whiteley’s secret is one of several real wrongdoings that must be separated from the murders.

Books and television — book spoilers

The television adaptation gives Whiteley and the contemporary Jack White the same performer. The echo demonstrates Alan’s habit of assigning a more sensational fictional history to a person he dislikes. Recognising the model for Whiteley should therefore encourage scepticism about Alan as well as curiosity about the case. The book’s invented criminal biography is not automatically a truthful description of the man living next door to its author.
