What was filmed here

The Greek film agency EKKOMED names Agios Nikolaos and Elounda as filming locations for Moonflower Murders. They provide the Cretan part of Susan and Andreas’s life, a bright coastal contrast to the English hotel investigation. This is a more useful starting point than treating the whole island as one location. Base your trip around these two towns on the eastern side of Crete and enjoy the landscape that gives the story its Mediterranean setting. The exact real property used for the fictional Hotel Trifilli is not identified here. Choose accommodation for its location and facilities, rather than booking a hotel because its terrace resembles a television frame.

About the place

Agios Nikolaos is organised around the harbour and Lake Voulismeni, with streets climbing away from the water. The lake is the town’s most recognisable landmark and a natural starting point for visitors, but the surrounding town is a working place as well as a holiday destination. Elounda, farther along the coast, has a harbour, waterfront businesses and views across its sheltered bay. The area’s history extends far beyond modern tourism, with the nearby island of Spinalonga and the remains associated with ancient Olous adding historical depth to a longer stay. These are separate attractions with their own access arrangements, not automatic Moonflower scene locations. The visual pleasure of the region is in the meeting of land and sea: boats, pale buildings, rising roads and changing light across the water. A compact town walk lets you absorb that character without trying to turn every bay into a solved filming puzzle.

Getting there

Crete has no passenger railway, so there is no nearest station to plan around. Heraklion is the practical major airport gateway for this eastern-Crete itinerary, followed by a bus, taxi or hire car. Check KTEL’s current Heraklion–Agios Nikolaos services and the onward connection to Elounda, including the last return. By car, use the main north-coast route towards Agios Nikolaos, then follow signed local roads for Elounda. Allow more time than a straight-line map suggests, particularly in summer traffic. Park in signed public parking on the town edges where possible and finish on foot. Do not use hotel entrances or waterfront working spaces as free sightseeing parking. For an evening meal in the other town, arrange the return before relying on a late bus.

A short self-guided walk

Allow 60–90 minutes for the Agios Nikolaos circuit and another 45–60 minutes for a gentle Elounda waterfront stroll, plus the transfer and meals.

  1. Start beside Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos. Walk at water level first, using the public promenade and keeping café seating areas clear.
  2. Continue to the channel linking the lake with the harbour. This is a useful point for understanding how the town’s central waterside spaces fit together.
  3. Follow the public harbour frontage for a wider sea view. Keep away from mooring operations and any closed quay sections.
  4. Return through the central streets for shade, shops and a meal break. Avoid climbing to a viewpoint simply because a photograph makes it look close.
  5. On a separate outing, start at Elounda’s harbour square and stroll the public waterfront. Treat the journey between towns as a bus or road transfer, not part of this short walk.
  6. Finish at a waterside café or return to your transport stop with enough time for the final service.

Eat and drink nearby

These businesses have current menus, booking pages or visitor listings. Check the venue pages before visiting. Seasonal opening and private events can change your plans.

  • Piato — a Greek restaurant in Agios Nikolaos publishing its current menu and contact details.
  • Karnagio — a lakeside Agios Nikolaos dining option listed by the destination’s visitor site.
  • Lotus Eaters — an Elounda restaurant with an elevated terrace and Greek and Mediterranean dishes; check seasonal service before travelling.

Where to stay

  • Agios Nikolaos — best for a town base with a harbour, shops and onward bus planning.
  • Elounda — choose a coastal stay close to the second confirmed filming area and its waterfront.
  • Plaka — a smaller option north of Elounda, useful for a quieter coastal stay and Spinalonga excursions.
  • Kritsa — an inland village alternative if you have arranged transport and prefer a different atmosphere from the waterfront.

Nearby

Kritsa and the Panagia Kera church offer an inland cultural excursion on roughly the half-hour scale from Agios Nikolaos, depending on traffic and your starting point. Elounda and Plaka make a natural coastal pairing. Spinalonga requires a separate boat plan, with operating conditions and season checked before departure; it is not just another stop on a town walk. The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos is a useful alternative when you want history without a long drive. Knossos and Heraklion are farther away and deserve a dedicated outing rather than a casual “nearby” label.

Best time to visit and accessibility

Spring and autumn often suit walking better than the hottest part of summer, but transport and restaurant schedules become more seasonal outside peak months. In summer, walk early or later in the day, carry water and use shade. Lake-level and harbour routes can be easier than the steep streets above them, though kerbs, surfaces and steps vary. Ask accommodation providers about the actual route from room to waterfront, not simply whether the hotel describes itself as accessible. A sea-view room can still involve a demanding climb.

Visiting respectfully

Use public promenades and ask before photographing restaurant customers or hotel interiors. The fictional hotel does not make any real property an open film set.

Frequently asked questions

Where in Crete was Moonflower Murders filmed?

Hotel Trifilli is the fictional hotel in the story. This guide does not identify a real booking property as its filming location.

Can I visit without hiring a car?

A town-based stay is possible using buses and taxis, but check the current services between your accommodation, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda.

Are Corfu and Crete the same filming destination?

No. Moonflower uses Crete; Marble Hall’s Greek story was filmed on Corfu, a different island requiring separate travel.

Plan a day out

Begin in Agios Nikolaos beside Lake Voulismeni, following the public waterside route towards the channel and harbour. Take the lower walk first so that you can judge the heat and your energy before considering steeper streets. Leave café seating and working harbour space clear, and choose a shaded pause when you need one. The town is one of the two filming places named by EKKOMED; checked 19 October 2026.

After a relaxed lunch, travel to Elounda for a second coastal view. Check the actual bus connection with KTEL Heraklion–Lasithi, or arrange a taxi and its return before leaving. The transfer is separate from the walking route, and no journey time is assumed. A slow morning can become a perfectly good full day in Agios Nikolaos if the connection or weather makes a second town inconvenient.

In Elounda, begin near the harbour square and stroll a comfortable stretch of public waterfront. Keep this part simple: boats, the bay and a meal can be enough, without adding a boat excursion or distant attraction. Leave Hotel Trifilli as a fictional setting rather than using a similar-looking terrace to identify a real hotel. Private guest areas are not places to enter for a camera comparison.

For a slower version, compare places to stay in Elounda and spread the towns over two days. Check the route from your room to the waterfront, especially if you want to avoid slopes, and confirm seasonal dining arrangements directly. Return with a memory of the two real towns rather than a hurried collection of uncertain scene matches.
