Why the screen structure changed

Horowitz explains that keeping Susan absent for much of the opening novel would waste Lesley Manville on television. The adaptation therefore brings Susan’s present and Pünd’s past together. This is a creator-confirmed structural change, rather than a complete chapter-to-episode comparison. Read the source.

Facts, clues & behind the scenes

A growing guide of verifiable notes. Facts likely to change—availability, ratings and access—are dated or kept out of permanent copy.

Series DNA

Anthony Horowitz adapted his own three Susan Ryeland novels.
Every instalment contains a second detective novel inside the main story.
Susan is both editor and investigator; Pünd is both fictional detective and her imagined reasoning partner.
The television device allowing Susan to converse with Pünd externalises her thought process.
Murray Gold composed the music across the adaptations.
Eleventh Hour Films and executive producer Jill Green connect all three productions.
The trilogy moves between contemporary publishing satire and golden-age detective fiction.

Magpie production

The adaptation was announced in 2020 and filmed in 2021.
Peter Cattaneo directed all six episodes.
Timothy Spall was originally announced as Pünd but withdrew because of scheduling.
Kersey in Suffolk became Saxby-on-Avon.
Production spent more than three weeks in Kersey.
The Bell Inn became the Queen’s Arms.
Dublin doubled for several English and London settings.
Dublin City University properties were used during production.
County Meath supplied additional country-house material.
Lesley Manville was also an executive producer.

Moonflower production

Rebecca Gatward directed all six episodes.
Filming took place in Crete and Dublin.
The production was completed by December 2023.
The first two BBC episodes were shown as a double bill on 16 November 2024.
The Greek setting contrasts Susan’s attempted new life with the enclosed English hotel mystery.
Mark Gatiss, Rosalie Craig, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Adrian Rawlins joined the ensemble.
Returning performers include Conleth Hill, Daniel Mays, Claire Rushbrook, Matthew Beard and Sanjeev Kohli.

Marble production

Filming began in March 2025.
The production filmed in London, Dublin and Corfu.
Rebecca Gatward and producer Suzanne McAuley returned.
Eleventh Hour Films produced the adaptation with Salt Films.
Reported Corfu locations include Corfu Old Town, Agios Ioannis and Danilia Village.
Archontiko Petrettini has been identified locally as a filming location.
The novel was published in 2025, unusually close to the television production.
The BBC releases all six episodes on iPlayer on 26 September 2026.

Books & clues

Magpie Murders was conceived as a standalone novel.
The book-within-the-book method lets clues work in two different contexts.
The magpie title invokes the traditional One for Sorrow rhyme.
Moonflower contains three linked puzzles: disappearance, past murder and manuscript murder.
The Moonflower manuscript is titled Atticus Pünd Takes the Case.
The Marble Hall manuscript is titled Pünd’s Last Case.
Horowitz has mentioned a possible fourth title, Mile End Murders; it is not a confirmed TV project.
The Marble Hall audiobook is narrated by Lesley Manville and Tim McMullan.

Production craft

Murray Gold’s music across the trilogy

Credited composer

Murray Gold is credited across the television adaptations. The guide treats programme credits as fact and musical interpretation as analysis.

Two narrative worlds

Changes in orchestration, pace and period colour help distinguish Susan’s contemporary investigation from the Pünd manuscript—an observation, not an official cue title.

Release status

No cue is presented as commercially released unless a label, composer or broadcaster source confirms it. Unreleased observations are never given invented track names.

Rights-safe visual analysis

Parallels between the worlds

Editor and detective

Susan reads structure, language and motive; Pünd listens, observes and tests behaviour. The television device that lets Susan encounter Pünd makes parallel reasoning visible.

Hotel and manuscript hotel

The contemporary hotel story and Conway’s embedded mystery echo one another through roles and relationships rather than literal duplication.

Author and continuation

Marble Hall shifts the authorship question from Conway’s finished books to a new writer and unfinished manuscript. Scene-by-scene visual comparisons still need a systematic screen review.

Objects as evidence

Manuscripts, missing pages, books and letters move between literary objects and physical evidence across the trilogy.
