Who Harry Lyttleton is
Harry Lyttleton is Judith’s husband and Lady Margaret Chalfont’s son-in-law in Pünd’s Last Case. He is developing a hotel in Corfu, a project whose financial problems make the family’s money unusually important to him. His cheerful social manner belongs to a household with more anxiety underneath it than it first admits.
Role in Marble Hall Murders
Harry’s movements help shape the investigation at Villa Belmar. He is part of the family routine that interrupts Margaret’s first attempt to speak privately with Pünd, and he is present when the crisis at the villa becomes apparent. The hotel project gives the detective a practical reason to ask what Harry needs and what he stands to lose.
Key relationships
Judith Lyttleton is his wife, and Lady Margaret Chalfont his mother-in-law. Atticus Pünd questions the family alongside Achilles Vassilikos. Harry’s connections extend beyond the family when Sofia’s disappearance brings another set of movements and explanations into focus.
Played by Richard Goulding
Richard Goulding plays Harry Lyttleton. Goulding plays the socially fluent son-in-law whose practical interests emerge as the family is questioned. His character is best followed through the household relationships and movements, rather than through a presumed contemporary double.
Their story and fate — spoilers
Sofia’s possession of Harry’s photograph and the accounts of an evening journey draw attention to him. The completed solution places him within the scheme surrounding Margaret’s death, while Robert is responsible for the central manipulation and Sofia’s killing. Harry’s financial need is therefore important, but Pünd still has to establish the actions and knowledge attached to it rather than stop at a plausible motive.
Books and television — book spoilers
Harry belongs to Eliot’s fictional household, and Goulding is not given a matching contemporary Crace role in the principal cast. That matters in a series whose frequent doubles can encourage viewers to force every character into a pair. The television adaptation moves the case from southern France to Corfu, making Harry’s hotel development part of the island setting rather than a guide to a real production business.
